In-Dash Navigation Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy in-dash navigation, right? No!

Garmin Drive 50 LM

This 5in sat nav has every essential function for a budget price.

It comes with preloaded maps of the UK and Ireland and has one of the clearest audio and visual combinations on the market, with features like Lane Assist and Junction View helping to make your drive as stress-free as possible.

Another great feature is Up Ahead, which lets you know about places of interest en route to your destination, from restaurants to cash points and petrol stations.

It’s also compatible with Garmin’s wireless rear camera for easier reverse parking.

TomTom Start 25

Much like the Garmin nuvi 57LM, this well-priced 5in sat nav from popular and trusted brand TomTom comes with lifetime map updates. It also ships with Western Europe, not just UK and Ireland.

It has high-end features despite being available for around £100, including speed camera location warnings in real time and parking assist, which can navigate you directly to the best place to park (it won’t park for you, though).

It’s easily attached to the dash or windscreen with an integrated mount. The screen cleverly flips to support whichever way round you want to use it.

TomTom GO 5100

The TomTom GO 5100 is a premium 5in sat nav device. Its high price reflects the fact it has global coverage – you can take it anywhere on the planet and it will give you up to date routes and advice.

It works by shipping with an integrated SIM card with unlimited data – meaning you never have to worry about running out of data, just make sure you can plug it in in the car to keep it charged.

It has excellent traffic information, and the system smartly reroutes you based on minute by minute traffic changes. It also integrates with the TomTom MyDrive app, allowing you to plan routes in advance on your smartphone or tablet.

Garmin nuvi 2699LMT-D

This is a good, if pricey, option if you want a larger 6in screen sat nav. It has all the features you’d expect from a modern GPS system, with added clever functions like Bluetooth for hands-free calling integration and the ability to function outside of cellular service.

It also has voice-activated navigation options to minimise the time needed to take your hands off the wheel to use the touchscreen. It also has clever integration with Garmin’s Smartphone Link app, allowing you to record detals of your travels such as where you parked, plus send addresses or locations straight from your phone to the sat nav.

Double Din Car Stereos

The dimension of a single DIN car stereo measures – 1/inches in width and – 1/inches in height. Some cars come with this type of stereos, which is standard for them and if you have this, then it can be impossible for you to upgrade to a double DIN car stereo.

What you need to know about the din is that it doesn’t mean that a double din head is better than a single din head unit. The only main difference comes regarding display, and if that is what is your worry and yet you have a single DIN which cannot display, there are several modern single din head units which have a flip out or retractable widescreen touch display. So before you decide that you need a double DIN car stereo, it is important to remember that your personal preferences matter a lot.

It is another common type of car stereo which is standard worldwide. It is a bit wide and high as compared to the single DIN car stereos.

It has a built-in screen touch display, which varies in size: from 3.inches or as large as inches. You can be lucky if you have a vehicle which is equipped with a double din stereo due to the flexibility to replace or upgrade it with an aftermarket double DIN stereo.

It is also possible to downgrade, but which is not recommended and it can only be done using a mounting bracket kit. If you downgrade it to a single din, it can mean that it can make you remain with the space of your dashboard which you can use as a storage compartment or even be used as an additional compartment like a graphic equalizer.

Pre-Amp Outputs

If you are to get state of the art speaker systems for your car, it is important that you pay close attention to pre-amp outputs. It refers to the amount of signal which you are going to receive before it becomes amplified.

Your listening experience can go to a notch higher with an increase in the outputs as it enables you to be able to customize it to your liking. How does it work? Well, you can hook up to three amplifiers to your head unit, which can then enable you to adjust the sound as you please.

Power

If you love a stereo that sounds powerful, then you are better off going for a head unit which is strong. The more the power the double din head unit produces, the better you can enjoy the overall output. It is important to put into consideration the RMS and peak of different models that you explore the shops.  The peak power is the capability of your stereo to go up in short bursts, but in case you decide to sustain this type of system for longer periods at a high level, it can burst the speakers. You are better off going for an RMS as it can regulate energy for your stereo for a longer period.

For you to purchase, it is advisable that you don’t judge your double din head unit by its peak power rather, by the RMS.

Power is one of the most important things for those people who are audio enthusiasts, and it is what can determine how powerful the system can be.

Theft Protection

Thieves find car stereos to be an easy target for their praying hands as it is easy to sell on the street as compared to the entire car with the risk of being caught is low. To ensure that after spending cash to purchase your desired stereo nobody doesn’t come to steal it, you need to install a theft protection.

When leaving the car, take off the face of the head unit and keep it in a different location like the glove box, under the seat, trunk or anywhere you deem safe. It is unlikely that a thief can have to break into your vehicle to access your car stereo because it is not worth the trouble.

Good Display

Thus, it can give you various options to set it up with multiple changing colors. You can have the option of changing color theme or only in some areas of the display. There are models which can change colors in tune with the beat of the song being played in improving your driving experience.

Get a head unit, which has a bright display which might light up too much at night, forcing you to adjust it, but during the day, it can help you to read it when it is sunny. If the display is dim, it can become hard to read on very bright days, which can be inconvenient.

App Control

It is a feature which is present in the latest double DIN head unit. It is an App which allows you to control your phone through the head unit, thus, no need for you to look at the phone.

It is an awesome feature as it can be able to allow you to access the contacts on the phone and other features including radio internet.

Ease Of Installation

Before you choose a double DIN head unit, you should look out for one that is easy to install. There are some manufacturers who are considerate and have come up with gadgets which are easy to install. If you are going to do the installation on your own, it is important that you get a model which has a harness which can enable separation of wires which makes them easier to connect.

You can realize that most double DIN unit comes with an installation manual which is easy to follow. If the installations are going to be done by yourself, you can try and get video tutorials online. You might be lucky to get a tutorial of an exact unit like the one you are installing and thus, make the work even easier.

Handsfree Operation

A quality head unit can be used as a handsfree device making it possible for you to receive and make calls by connecting your phone to it via Bluetooth.

Your caller can be able to hear you on the other end through an inbuilt microphone or the microphone on the phone, and you can be able to hear them through the speakers.

Other Media Connection

You could have an option of getting a double DIN head unit that could enable you to use devices such as AUX jacks and USB ports. With those above, the upgrade could enable you to older MPplayers, charge your phone and other devices.

How To Remove A Double Din Head Unit From Your Car

If you have an outdated double Din and You are thinking of replacing it with an ultramodern one, then there is an easier way of doing it. And because I did remove mine last week, the step by step is still fresh in my head I can reproduce it here so that it can be of help to you.

Step 1:

First, the faceplate has to be removed. My stereo has a button placed at one corner, and I just pushed the faceplate forward.

If you model is different from mine, it might be one that all you need to do is to grab the faceplate and pull it off. After you remove the faceplate, keep it safe.

Step 3

After the trim, you should be able to locate the Key Holes. After removing the trim, it is easy to see the Key Holes which are on either side of the stereo. You need to insert the key s in the holes until they click in place. Once that is done, you need to get hold of the keys and pull the stereo out of the dashboard.

Step 4

The last thing is to remove the wires which are easy because at this point, you can see the back of the stereo and all you need to do is to unplug it. Before you do this, make sure that the car’s battery is off. All the wires should be unplugged from the back of the stereo to take it out completely.

How I Test My Double Din Radio Without A Car

You can touch the red, black and the yellow to an av battery and it will light up and act as a normal double din radio in a car. If it has extra features like USB, GPS, you will need a battery that is over volts.

If I Have A Steering Wheel Which Has Audio Controls Inbuilt, Can I Need To Change It When I Install This Unit

It won’t be necessary to make a new set of a steering wheel just because you have installed a double din head unit. You can only need an adapter to make the new stereo to connect automatically.

When I Want To Sync With My Phone, What Is The Difference Between A USB Connection And Aux Input?

For the USB connection, you can have to access your phone functions through the stereo, thus make it easier to use. For an auxiliary cord, you can have to play the audio and music from the jack of your phone’s headphone thus making the quality to depend on the phone.

1Will My Car Stereo Work If I Didn’t Connect The Antenna?

The work of an antenna is to get hold of the radio waves, and anything that makes it be pulled down inside the car could make it your car stereo not to work well especially the AM/FM part of it. And all you will need to make it work correctly is to pull it back if you find it pulled in and this will automatically improve the reception.

It is also important to note that, any time you go to a car wash, make sure you check out the antenna as the attendant might pull it in and forget to pull it out and thus, affect the reception. If you have an aerial antenna that can be pulled in and out at will, and your reception has been poor of late, it would be worth checking the antenna and make sure that it is in its rightful position.

Waylens

So you’re interested in getting the best dash cam for your needs. Great decision! There are a few things to take into consideration when deciding which dashcam to buy, but our buyer’s guide will make the process simple. Follow along with our questions so you can pinpoint which in-car video recorder is the best dashcam option for you. Ready to get started?

I only want to record out my front windshield.

Most dashcams are mounted on your windshield, the camera lens faces and records the road ahead of you, and only records outside of your car. To be more specific, these dashcams are known as single-lens dashcams because they only have the one lens. Single lens dashcams are the most common and basic type of dash cam, and they are a great introduction to protecting yourself from the hazards of driving!

If you’re looking for a straight-forward dashcam and you are only concerned with recording out the front of your windshield, take a look at our basic dash cams category.

Who this is for—or when a phone isn’t enough

For day-to-day navigation, however, a smartphone can work well for most people, especially if you have a car charger and a car mount to keep it where you can easily see it. Google Maps, Waze, Apple Maps, and other good nav apps will typically get you to your destination just fine. And their crowdsourced, up-to-the-minute traffic information is hard to beat. Also, the ease with which you can search for something on your device (a restaurant, a park, the office of a personal contact) and then make it your destination with a simple tap—or a copy-and-paste—makes phones hugely convenient.

Pull Quote

Though people may reach for their smartphones for a short jaunt, stand-alone GPS units are better, especially for longer trips.

As a result, though people may reach for their smartphones for a short jaunt, we think stand-alone GPS units are better, especially for longer trips. And so do many of our readers. When we polled readers in 201about car GPS devices, a majority (5percent) said they wanted something that could still guide them through cell-service dead spots and wouldn’t drain their smartphone’s battery too fast (5percent). About a third (2percent) told us that using navigation apps on their phone used too much of their data plan. Notably, most respondents (5percent) said they wouldn’t want to use a smartphone app, even if it had all of the same features they wanted in a dedicated GPS device.

The better GPS devices, such as Garmin’s, are great at guiding you through interchanges with 3D views that show you what lane to be in and which highway sign to follow.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The Garmin Drive 5LMT-S has a few quirks that we’re not fond of. For one thing, the TFT screen—which the unit has instead of a capacitive touchscreen similar to what you find on a smartphone—lacks real sensitivity, so you have to get used to tapping with a bit of oomph, and scrolling with your finger through menus is far from smooth. We often accidentally activated whatever menu option our finger landed on rather than successfully scrolling. Fortunately, the unit has big up/down arrows to the left that you can use if you don’t like the finger scrolling.

The DriveSmart 5LMT-S has a multitouch screen with pinch-to-zoom capability.

The DriveSmart 5LMT-S (left) sports a 5-inch screen, while the DriveSmart 6LMT-S gives you a huge, 6.95-inch display.

Budget pick

The TomTom Go 50 S is a good basic navigator that will get you to your destination. Though it doesn’t provide as much on-screen info as the Garmin models, it does let you know when you’re going over the speed limit with a bright red speed display.

If you want reliable navigation for considerably less cash, we recommend the TomTom Go 50 S. It’s a fully functional, if basic, navigator that has many of the hallmarks of modern devices, including lane guidance, traffic (through a smartphone connection), and free lifetime maps of the US, Canada, and Mexico. The Go 50 S also has the same inches of screen real estate as our top pick, and in many metro areas it will display familiar landmarks in 3D mode so you can more easily orient yourself with the map.

Though it will alert you to safety-camera locations (speed and red lights), the Go 50 S doesn’t provide the array of alerts the new Garmin devices do. It’s slightly bulkier than the Garmin models, and for us its processor was a bit sluggish in response time when we tapped on the screen. And overall, we didn’t find TomTom’s interface to be quite as driver-friendly or helpful as Garmin’s. But the TomTom Go 50 S will reliably take you where you need to go for less money.

The competition

If you want to save a few bucks and don’t need Garmin’s newest features, our previous Garmin picks—the Drive 50LMT, DriveSmart 50LMT, and DriveAssist 50LMT—are discounted while supplies last. They’re essentially the same as the newer 5LMT-S models, with some exceptions. The Drive 50LMT lacks the ability to connect to Garmin’s Smartphone Link app via Bluetooth for live traffic, weather alerts, and parking info. The DriveSmart 50LMT doesn’t have the DriveSmart 5LMT-S’s built-in Wi-Fi. The DriveAssist 50LMT also lacks Wi-Fi, as well as the ability to automatically text a contact if it detects a crash. And all omit the 5LMT-S line’s TripAdvisor ratings, parking info, and location-sharing features.

Garmin’s DriveLuxe 5LMT-S is the highest-priced 5-inch model we looked at, and though it offers some features that aren’t available on other Garmin models, we don’t think they are compelling enough to recommend the DriveLuxe as a pick. It has the same functionality as our top pick and runner-up, as well as a higher-resolution display, a handy powered magnetic mount (just hold the DriveLuxe close to it, and the mount will snap the unit into place), and, like the Garmin DriveAssist 5LMT-S, the ability to automatically text a contact if it detects a crash. The DriveLuxe also has a sleek metal housing (rather than plastic), which is elegant looking; some owners, however, complain that it gets pretty toasty while sitting in the sun.

Magellan’s forward-collision and lane-departure warnings use smaller icons and less attention-getting sounds than Garmin’s alerts, which reduces their effectiveness.

TomTom will be introducing some new models soon and phasing out older ones, including our budget pick, the Go 50 S, and its larger sibling, the Go 60 S. For now, both models are discounted and still available through some outlets.

An outgoing model we tested is the TomTom Go 500, which is still available at a discounted price. Its features are similar to those of our top pick, and it has a multitouch capacitive screen that permits pinch-to-zoom, which makes exploring the map easier. The Go 500’s traffic data is available only when you tether the unit to a smartphone, however, and we didn’t find its screen info and voice directions as driver-friendly as the Garmin models’.

The TomTom Via 1515M was the least expensive model we tested, but currently it is only slightly cheaper than the Go 50 S we chose as our budget pick. The Via 1515M does give you up to three hours of battery life (an hour more than the Go 50 S), but it doesn’t allow you to receive traffic alerts, which is a critical feature for many drivers.

What to look forward to

At the CES 201trade show, TomTom introduced several new GPS models, including the Go 520 and 620, and the Via 1425, 1525, and 162The new 5- and 6-inch Go models have built-in Wi-Fi support for easier updates, capacitive pinch-to-zoom touchscreens, and Bluetooth capability, which when linked to a smartphone allows hands-free calls, the ability to have texts read aloud, and the use of a smartphone’s personal assistant. The Via models, available with 4-, 5-, and 6-inch screens, respectively, are lower-priced, budget navigators. We’ll test the new models when they’re released and let you know how they stack up in a future update.

Receiver

Another great option that you could buy from the market today is this Pioneer AVH-X2800BS. This unit has a display that is backlit and LED along with a touchscreen having WVGA resolution and it measures 6.inches.

This head unit also features 1band graphic equalizer making your music sound richer. Are you a meticulous one? If yes, this one is right for you. It has an audio streaming feature and Bluetooth hands-free calling feature too. Who wouldn’t want those features?

Screen Double DIN Car Stereo

Being enabled with a touchscreen display and two touch buttons for the menu and CD opener, this head unit from Jensen is another great choice to consider. It features 6.inches of touchscreen that would help you navigate easily and allow you to watch videos too.

This one is indeed a fully-advanced unit along with a built-in iPad, iPod, and iPhone controls. You can even dial phone numbers right from the screen only. You might as well easily access the phone book and also answer calls without hands touch.

This double din navigation could also be easily connected to any devices or even connect it with 3.mm jack. This shows how great this unit is.

Apart from that, you could also play USB, AM, FM, CD-R, CD and wireless streaming of music through a Bluetooth is possible. There are wide connectivity options offered by Jensen.

And who wouldn’t love its five selectable UI colors as well as backgrounds that could match the interior of your car? This as well supports large font size making it a lot easier to read out.

JVC KW-R910BT Car Audio Din

It may look like your stock stereo head with a few more lights, but that’s where the similarities end between the R910BT and anything you’re currently using. Sure, it does all the basic stuff like tune into terrestrial radio and play CDs, but you’re also getting two-way control for both Apple and Android products, as well as standard Bluetooth connectivity.
